Whether your space is large or small, a single family home, condo, or an apartment, preparing in advance for a move can help alleviate some of the undeniable stress. Though you are excited, there is a lot to get done, but these tips can help you prepare successfully.
De-cluttering is the ideal place to start:
- Sort through your belongings.
- Sell or donate items you no longer need.
- You should also toss out broken or worn out items.
Taking these simple steps means less to pack and prepare for your move. If you are staging your home to sell, take this opportunity to pack up all your non-essential personal items (i.e. family photos, personal knick-knacks, etc.) so your home is not as personalized and less cluttered. The packed boxes can be stored in an organized manner in the garage or in a closet.
Pack your belongings room by room:
- Label each box as you go with what’s inside as well as where it should go in your new house.
- For items you will need on arrival – label them with the words “Open First” so you will know where to begin.
- Alternatively, you can number your boxes, and create a spreadsheet with the contents.
Other items to consider:
- Don’t pack medication, checkbooks, passports, or other important papers, but keep them separate and with you, not on the moving truck.
- If you have small children and pets, consider having an offsite sitter for both on moving day. It’ll help you and the movers stay focused.
- Schedule the transfer or disconnection of your utilities, cable, internet, the day after your move, so you’ll have access if needed on moving day.
Finally, if your home has been sold or leased, make note of the condition of each room before the movers arrive. You’ll want a list, as well as photos or a video, in case there is damage caused by the movers.
Now, you’re all set! Relax, enjoy your move, and your new home!
